Journey in the Word: Denying God’s Goodness

Week 3

Read:  Genesis 3:1-5

It’s almost impossible to imagine that God would deliberately establish the divine-human relationship to knowingly prevent Adam and Eve from becoming everything they could be.  But that’s what satan suggests.  “Your eyes will be opened” if you eat the fruit, the devil says.  And what God really wants is for your eyes to remain shut!

This amazing deception did not end in the Garden.  There are still lingering suggestions that God is really working to inhibit our existence, and sometimes outright working to bring heartache and tragedy into our lives.

Take insurance policies, for example.  Damage done to our automobiles, homes, and even to people is called “an act of God.”   Or recall times when a baby has died and someone said, “I guess God just needed another little rosebud in heaven, so he plucked your child from the earth.”

Oh, my!  Why do we still have the notion that “mysteries” have to be explained in ways that essentially say, “God wanted your life to be less than it might have been.”
