Journey in the Word: Saul’s Early Promise

Week 8

Read:  1 Samuel 10:24

Saul is Israel’s first king, and he personifies the “mixed bag” that Israel will experience throughout the reign of the Kings.  The readings today and tomorrow are highly symbolic.  Saul has a good beginning, but a tragic end.

His decline is complex and hard to attribute to any single thing.  But it seems to have emerged in a destructive combination of position and emotion—summarized in the word “jealousy.”

Still today, we are headed for trouble when we cannot stand the thought of someone else achieving success or gaining praise apart from us.  A David is always a threat to a Saul.
