Journey in the Word: The Song of Songs

Week 10

Read:  Song of Songs 2:16

In a culture which grossly misunderstands and misrepresents sexuality, the Song of Songs may be one of the most-important books in the Bible.  It is the single-best book which describes love on God’s terms.

I agree with Stott that there is no need to allegorize the message.  Let it begin in the love between a man and a woman—between a husband and a wife.  Let love on God’s terms saturate the marriage relationship, with all of its holy sensuality.

Then….if we follow Paul’s association and see a connection between marriage and the church, so be it.  By starting with the human, we can still move on to the divine as we like.  But it will not be an exploration of two different things, but rather a discovery that what God wishes for a husband-wife relationship is the same thing He wants to define the Christ/Bride of Christ reality.
