One of the maxims of the spiritual life is that God uses everything and wastes nothing. Parker Palmer has said essentially the same thing in his book, Let Your Life Speak, when he writes that God takes our lives seriously, and so must we.
One of the earliest ways we do this is by getting in touch with our deepest values. Through the influence of our family and friends—through the influence of our educational training—through our life experiences—and other things as well, we come to hold deep within ourselves certain values. We often refer to them as convictions.
One of the ways to get at them is to ask ourselves, “What is necessary to make the world a better place?” Another way is to look at what ignites your passion—either in terms of those things you feel need doing, or the things you see going on which you feel should not be done.
Values—-convictions—“the way things ought to be” (even when they are not).
We often find God using these things to get our attention, and when God has our attention, we’re in a position to receive and respond to a “call” from God—a call which will sometimes provide us a means to honor our values and engage our passions.
Look for a “burning bush” in your life. God is in it.
