I was reading Thomas Merton’s journal (April 28, 1957) in which he was pondering the unification of the church after centuries of being divided. He wrote, “I will create in myself a reunion of the divided Church.”
His words spoke powerfully to me. Like you, I’m sure, I have prayed for the fulfillment of Jesus’ prayer in John 17, where he prays that we may all be one. But I have continued to see division, competition, and even judgmentalism between parts of the Body of Christ.
Merton’s words, however, have given me a new option. I can unite the Church in my heart, even as I continue to pray that it may be unified in other ways here on the earth.
I hope you can see that this Oboedire blog is an attempt to create this kind of unity. I quote people from the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant segments of the Church. And for more than thirty years, I have found “the great cloud of witnesses” (expressed in all three dimensions) to be contributive to my spiritual formation.
We may not live to see the reunion of the Church as Jesus prayed for it in John 17. But in the meantime, I agree with Merton, we can create a united Church in ourselves—a union that allows men and women from all parts of the Body of Christ to enrich us.
