Meditation:  “Welcome to the Club!”

We are not as far removed from ancient times in our hearts as we think we are.  We still harbor and promote the idea that some people are “more sinful” than others.  Let some pestilence, natural disaster, or judgment occur, and you can count on someone to declare that “they” had it coming.

Surely, we continue to tell ourselves, some people are “worse sinners” than others.  And then, Jesus walks into the room and sets the record straight.

“No, I tell you….unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did” (v. 5).

Ah, Lent—holy season— one that we don’t like very much, because it comes every year to say, “Welcome to the club!”

But if we don’t leave the building in disgust, Jesus shows us a fig tree, reminding us that God’s indictment always comes with an invitation…and time to accept it.
