Holy Saturday
John 19:38-42
Nicodemus had come to Jesus by night, apparently to keep his visit with Jesus a secret. Joseph too was a “secret disciple.”
Neither of them would have been expected to be the two who showed up to take Jesus’ body away.
But that’s what holy week does every year—it brings people to church who wouldn’t be expected to show up the rest of the year. It brings out some “secret disciples.”
Nicodemus and Joseph were exposed. They could never again deny their association with Christ. Moreover, they were unclean because they touched the dead body.
But none of that mattered anymore. And that’s what holy week does. It exposes people. But it doesn’t matter anymore. The only thing that matters is becoming identified with Jesus—touching him because he first touched us.
We are less than 24 hours away from having it happen all over again!
