The Holy Gospel: June 9, 2013 (Year C)

(Thanks to a friend for catching the error in the passage, Luke–not John)

Read:  Luke 7:11-17

Meditation:  “He Had Compassion”

Children are not supposed to die before their parents do.  When they do, it is tragic.  The woman was especially vulnerable in that day, but as a pastor I knew people who came to old age with no family to care for them.  This is not a story that can be relegated to the past.  There are people today, who have buried their children and now face very sad and uncertain futures.

The heart of today’s lesson is found in these words: “he had compassion for her.”  This is the way Jesus enters every situation where something has happened that shouldn’t have.  He comes directly (now through the Holy Spirit) and indirectly through individuals and congregations who will not leave people to suffer alone.

Today is a good day to take notice of those who may be facing the future alone.  Newspapers and nursing homes are good places to get clues.  When we do, we will see Jesus already there–waving for us to come and join him.  “Look over here” is one of the things he says most.

Rev Harper, would you please check and see if the verse you have posted is the one you intend for this writing? Thank you for your words, though.
