Meditation:  “Crickets”

I heard recently about a pastor whose caregiving and witness resulted in one of the town’s “outcasts” starting to come to church.  Problem was, he came in pretty much the same shape that he was in out on the street.  He clearly didn’t know how to “dress properly” or “clean up” so he could sit with the rest of the congregation and “behave himself.”

So….it wasn’t long before some of the church leaders approached the pastor and asked him to politely tell the “bum” to stop attending.  The pastor thought for a moment, and then replied, “Okay, I’ll do it.  But the day he goes, I go.”

This real story looks, sounds, feels, and smells a lot like today’s lesson.  Something happens to the outcast, and no one can celebrate it.  Jesus has upset the social, religious, and economic landscape.  The people don’t want either the man or the Master to stay.  So, Jesus gets into his boat and sails away (8:37), and the man “went away” (8:39).   Crickets.
