Meditation: “Thinking Differently”
Jesus not only avoided the trap that the Sadducees were setting, he added a significant insight as he did so–namely, we cannot use earthly categories to interpret heavenly realities.
Marriage is one of the holiest and loveliest categories given to humanity “in the beginning.” But Jesus said it cannot begin to dscribe how relationships will exist in heaven.
The biblical truth is revelation, not projection. That is, we are to use heavenly messages to interpret earthly living, but the reverse doesn’t hold true. Revelation produces insight; projection produces misunderstanding.
So, we are called to think differently as we make the Christian journey, seeking to realise the Kingdom on earth, but not trying to insist that heaven be like the earth. Just as there is light our eyes cannot see and sound our ears cannot hear, there are realities that cannot be described using the categories available to us here.
