Meditation: “Be Prepared!”

Jesus’ extended teaching (Luke 21:5-36), which today’s lesson only introduces, can be summed up in two words: be prepared.  Scholars believe Jesus was mixing two events in his discourse—the fall of Jerusalem that would happen in 70 a.d., and the end of the age that would happen at some undisclosed time.  With respect to both, there is only one message: get ready.

We face the same challenge in our lives.  Some things are closer to happening, while others are farther off.  Either way, wise disciples prepare themselves.  It is too late to wait until the moment arrives.  We enter into our experiences (at least the ones we can anticipate), having equipped ourselves appropriately.  Life is not simply the things which are taking place; it is also the attitudes toward those things that are taking shape.
