Larry Kalajainen and I went to seminary together. In fact, Jeannie and I lived in student housing next door to Larry and his wife, Carol. Since our graduation in 1973, I have followed from afar Larry’s ministry as a missionary, international pastor, and scholar. Along the way, I have benefited from his writings and used them in my teaching of spiritual formation.
That’s why I was so happy to learn that he has written a new book entitled, ‘The Bible Says: What is Good About the Good Book?
As you know, pertinent information regarding the history, authority, and application of Scripture is scattered all over the place in books, scholarly writings, and popular articles. Larry has drawn together much of this material into a single volume, showing what an amazing, complex, and wonderful thing it is to say, “The Bible Says.”
If you are ready to trace the evolution of those three words, this is the book for you. It concentrates the key terms, crucial concepts, hermeneutical tools, and lived-out convictions into one book. It is not a “quick read” or a “one view only” book. Larry dispells the notion that any view of scripture can be contained in a superficial articulation or singular theory.
Instead, he produces a “mosaic” for reverencing and using the Bible in our faith formation. He has used the material in the book with a Christians in a variety of cultures, backgrounds, and persuasions. The eclectic nature of the book reflects the richness of Larry’s pastoral ministry, including a stint at the International Church in Paris.
Larry wants us to “stand under” the Bible, rather than above it, or apart from it, and he believes we will join Christians of the ages in doing this when we recognize the amazing factors which produced it. His approach enables us to see that “the Bible is the Church’s book, and the Church is the Bible’s people.”
Here is my take: If you are ready for a “thinking person’s” look at the nature and authority of the Bible, you are ready for this book. If your small group, or a Sunday School class is ready to roll up its sleeves and go beneath the surface, you will emerge with a deeper appreciation and greater wonder for those times when you find yourself declaring “the Bible says.”
The book is available as a paperback or ebook from Amazon.
