Ancient Wisdom: February 9, 2014 (Year A)

Read:  Isaiah 58:1-12

Meditation:  “Act Like It!”

In a scathing denouncement of superficial religiosity, which demeans the name of religion itself, God tells Israel to drop all the pious talk and public shows and enact their faith.

The same message thunders down the corridors of time, arriving squarely in our nation and right on each of our doosteps.

God says, “Stop printing ‘In God We Trust’ on your money when you spend it in ways that dishonor me and only feather your own nests!”  God levels the same air-tight charges against us that He has made to people of all ages who wear crosses, but do not bear them.

There is no comfortable way to wiggle out of this week’s lectionary text.  God says, “You tell me you’re religious?  Act like it!  Until then I am not impressed.”
