Meditation: “It’s Up to You”

The lectionary readings the past few weeks have directly or indirectly borne witness to God’s faithfulness–as all biblical passages do in one way or another. Again today, we are reminded that God has made salvation (life) available to everyone.

But the universal offer hinges on thing: our acceptance of it. Revelation must be followed by response; otherwise, it is an invitation with no RSVP.

“Choose life,” Moses exhorts the people, because he knows they can choose death. And as long as time exists, nothing will be more amazing than the notion that God Almighty offers us abundant and eternal life…and then steps back to wait to see whether or not we will receive it.

In the African-American tradition, an old phrase captures the essence if our reading today: “God votes for you. The devil votes against you. You break the tie.”
