Pope Francis turns to the heart of faith–the “truth” that emerges from the Lover-beloved relationship. We have faith ultimately because God is Love…and because God loves. And we have been given…and accepted…that love.
We believe because we are loved, and on the basis of having been loved, we love. The “truth” we claim is our testimony to the way life works when lived in relation to God’s love.
This love includes emotion, but it is not limited to it. It is rooted in the nature of God. Without this, love is fickle fleeting. But grounded in God’s Being (“I AM”), it is constant and eternal.
Faith rooted in love sets the trajectory for our lives, because we come to see that the restoration of love–between God and humanity, between people, and between humanity and the natural order–is the cause to which we are supposed to be given.
