Lumen Fidei: The Ecclesial Manifestation

Having looked last week at Pope Francis’ theme “Faith and Theology,” we find ourselves moving from Chapter Two into Chapter Three.

That might not seem like a big deal, except it represents a movement into the ecclesial dimension of the light of faith.  Chapters One and Two gave us the content of the Pope’s message.  Now we begin an exploration of the container to hold and transmit it.

The organization of this document is significant and revealing.  It is significant because our distrust of institutionalism can create a barrier to the full embrace of what the Pope is trying to say to us.  The organization is revealing in that it is clear that while Pope Francis considers the Church essential, not just any kind of Church will do.

So, stay tuned for a fruitful look at the Church’s role in containing and communicating the light of faith.
