Lumen Fidei: The Sacraments & Transmission of Faith

The Church must hand down living faith if it is to perpetuate the Christian life from generation to another.  Doctrine alone is insufficient.  There must be encounter, and this comes when the Church worships

In worship we encounter God through proclamation, hymnody, and fellowship.  But the encounter reaches its climax in the sacraments.  In baptism we experience living faith as the sign of initiation.  In Eucharist we experience living faith as the sign of continuation.  The Water of birth, followed by the Bread and Wine of life.

Our response to the sacraments is our profession of faith, not as an assent to truth, but as a participation in it.  We are gathered into the community of faith through our coming to the font and table.  We walk in the light given to us the sacraments.
